How to create and place Smart Bundles

How to generate AI bundles, use templates, configure goals and constraints, and display bundles using the Smart Bundle block.

Overview

Smart Bundles automatically generate product bundles that increase average order value by recommending items that shoppers are likely to buy together.

They combine AI, product relationships, and your own merchandising rules to create bundles that feel natural and relevant to each shopper.

Smart Bundles help you:

  • Increase average order value
  • Promote complementary products
  • Encourage multi‑item purchases
  • Highlight accessories and add‑ons
  • Create curated collections for specific goals
  • Automate bundle creation at scale

Bundles can be created manually, generated by AI, or built from templates such as frequently bought together, complete the look, discount bundles, and mix and match.

Smart Bundles only appear on your storefront when the Bundle block is added to the page.

Smart Bundles decide what to recommend. The theme block decides where the bundle appears.

Open the Smart Bundles menu

All bundle creation and management happens inside the Smart Bundles menu.

To access it:

  1. Go to the left navigation
  2. Click 'Smart Bundles'
  3. Select the 'Manage Bundles' tab
  4. Click 'Create Bundle'

The Manage Bundles tab shows:

  • All existing bundles
  • Their status
  • Their type (AI, template, manual)
  • Their performance
  • Their last updated date

The Manage Bundles tab is your control centre for all bundle creation and optimisation.

Generate AI Bundles

AI Bundles automatically create product combinations based on:

  • Shopper behaviour
  • Product relationships
  • Purchase history
  • Browsing patterns
  • Complementary product signals

To generate AI Bundles:

  1. Open the Smart Bundles menu
  2. Click 'Generate AI Bundles'
  3. Review the AI suggestions
  4. Select the bundles you want to create
  5. Click 'Create Bundle'

AI Bundles are ideal for discovering combinations you may not think of manually.

Example:
AI may identify that customers who buy a winter coat often purchase gloves and a scarf, even if you never created that bundle manually.

AI Bundles update automatically as your product catalogue and customer behaviour change.

Start from a template

Templates give you a fast way to create common bundle types.
When you click 'Start from template', you will see:

  • Frequently bought together
  • Complete the look
  • Discount bundle
  • Mix and match

Each template automatically adjusts the bundle goals and constraints.

Frequently bought together

Shows items commonly purchased with the main product.

Complete the look

Shows complementary items such as accessories or matching products.

Discount bundle

Creates a bundle with a percentage or fixed discount.

Mix and match

Lets shoppers choose items from a group to build their own bundle.

Example:
Use 'Complete the look' for fashion, home decor, or beauty routines.

Templates automatically configure goals and constraints, but you can edit them later.

Create a Bundle manually

Manual bundles give you full control over the products and structure.

To create one:

  1. Click 'Create Bundle'
  2. Choose 'Manual Bundle'
  3. Select the products to include
  4. Set the bundle size
  5. Add optional discounts
  6. Configure goals and constraints

Manual bundles are ideal for:

  • Seasonal promotions
  • Curated collections
  • Brand‑specific bundles
  • Limited edition sets

Example:
Create a holiday gift set with three curated products.

Manual bundles do not use AI unless you enable AI assistance in the configuration tab.

Configure AI Settings

The AI Configuration tab contains all bundle logic.
Your screenshots show three full screens of settings, including:

General settings

  • Bundle name
  • Description
  • Bundle size
  • Discount options
  • Display title and subtitle

Advanced settings

  • Goals and constraints
  • AI intensity
  • Contextual settings
  • Display locations
  • Excluded products
  • Custom rules

Each setting influences how the bundle behaves and which products are recommended.

Example:
Increase AI intensity to allow the system to explore more creative combinations.

The AI Configuration tab is where you shape the behaviour and purpose of your bundle.

Adjust Goals and Constraints

Goals and constraints tell the AI what the bundle should achieve.

Common goals include:

  • Increase average order value
  • Promote complementary items
  • Highlight accessories
  • Encourage multi‑item purchases
  • Promote slow‑moving inventory
  • Increase visibility of new products

Constraints help you control:

  • Minimum and maximum bundle size
  • Product categories to include
  • Product categories to exclude
  • Price ranges
  • Inventory limits

When you click a template, these settings adjust automatically.

Example:
Selecting 'Frequently bought together' increases the weight of items with strong historical purchase relationships.

Goals and constraints are the most important part of bundle quality.

Use the Bundle Simulator

The bundle simulator shows how your bundle will behave in real scenarios.

You can:

  • Preview recommended items
  • Test different products
  • See how AI responds to your goals
  • Validate that the bundle makes sense
  • Identify irrelevant or unexpected recommendations
  • Adjust settings and instantly see the impact

The simulator helps you confirm that your settings produce the right recommendations.

Example:
If the simulator shows unrelated items, adjust your excluded products or contextual settings.

The simulator is the best way to understand how your bundle will behave before publishing.

Save, activate, and manage Bundles

Once your bundle is ready:

  1. Click 'Save'
  2. Toggle the bundle to 'Active'
  3. Use the three dots menu to edit or delete the bundle

Inactive bundles will not appear on your storefront.

The three dots menu allows you to:

  • Edit the bundle
  • Delete it
  • View analytics
  • Adjust settings

Use AI Bundles to quickly create high‑performing bundles.

Place Bundles using the Smart Bundle Block

Smart Bundles will not appear until the correct theme block is added.

To place it:

  1. Open Shopify admin
  2. Go to Online Store → Themes
  3. Click 'Edit theme'
  4. Select the page template where you want bundles to appear
  5. Add the 'Smart Bundles' block from the 'Apps' tab
  6. Position it in the layout
  7. Save

The block will now display the highest scoring bundle for each visitor.

Example:
Add the block to product pages to show frequently bought together bundles.

If the block is missing or added to the wrong template, bundles will never appear.
