Display logic and page-level context
How Smart Content chooses where to appear and how it adapts to each page
Overview
Smart Content does not appear everywhere by default. It uses display logic and page‑level context to decide when a message should be shown and where it makes the most sense. This ensures that messages feel natural, relevant and well‑timed rather than intrusive. Display logic looks at the structure of your store, the type of page the shopper is viewing and the behavioural signals they generate.
This article explains how Smart Content evaluates context and how it chooses the most appropriate moment and location for each message.
Understanding page-level context
Every page on your store has a different purpose. A homepage encourages discovery, a product page encourages evaluation and a cart page encourages completion. Smart Content uses this context to decide which messages are appropriate.
Examples:
- On a homepage, discovery messages perform well.
- On a product page, reassurance or comparison messages are more relevant.
- On a cart page, friction‑reducing messages help shoppers complete their purchase.
Context ensures messages feel aligned with the shopper’s current step.
How Smart Content evaluates page type
Smart Content recognises key Shopify page types such as:
- homepage
- product page
- collection page
- cart page
- search results
- custom landing pages
Each page type influences which messages are eligible. For example, a message designed for product evaluation will not appear on the homepage, even if the shopper qualifies for the segment.
This prevents messages from appearing in places where they do not make sense.
Page type determines which messages are eligible.
How placement affects message behaviour
Smart Content appears inside the AI Personalised Banner block. Where you place this block in your theme affects how the message is perceived.
Examples:
- Placing it near the top of a product page makes reassurance messages more visible.
- Placing it mid‑page helps guidance messages feel natural.
- Placing it near the cart summary supports conversion‑focused messages.
Placement does not change eligibility, but it does influence impact.
How Smart Content handles multiple eligible messages
If several messages are eligible for the same page, Smart Content ranks them based on relevance. Page context is a major factor in this ranking.
For example:
- A reassurance message may outrank a discovery message on a product page.
- A guidance message may outrank an offer on a collection page.
- A friction‑reducing message may outrank everything on a cart page.
The engine chooses the message that best fits the page’s purpose.
The engine ranks messages based on page relevance.
How Smart Content avoids conflicting messages
Smart Content prevents messages from appearing in situations where they would conflict with the shopper’s intent or the page’s purpose.
Examples:
- A discount message will not appear on a page where reassurance is more appropriate.
- A discovery message will not appear when the shopper is deep in the checkout journey.
- A category suggestion will not appear on the cart page.
This keeps messaging coherent and avoids confusion.
Smart Content avoids showing messages that conflict with the page’s purpose.
How behavioural signals influence display timing
Page context tells Smart Content where the shopper is. Behavioural signals tell it how the shopper is behaving on that page.
Examples:
- Long dwell time may trigger reassurance.
- Rapid switching between products may trigger guidance.
- Returning to a product may trigger confidence‑building messages.
Behaviour and context work together to determine the right moment.
Behaviour helps Smart Content choose the right moment to display.
How Smart Content adapts across different pages
Smart Content does not treat each page in isolation. It considers the shopper’s journey across multiple pages.
For example:
- If a shopper has already seen a message on the homepage, Smart Content may suppress it on the product page.
- If a shopper shows hesitation on a product page, Smart Content may adjust the message on the cart page.
- If a shopper returns after a break, Smart Content may prioritise a welcome‑back message.
This creates a consistent, personalised journey.

How display rules support your strategy
Display rules allow you to define where a message is allowed to appear. You can limit a message to specific page types or allow it to appear anywhere the engine finds relevant.
Examples:
- A seasonal banner may be allowed on all pages.
- A reassurance message may be limited to product pages.
- A cart incentive may be restricted to the cart page only.
Display rules give you control while still allowing the engine to optimise.
Display rules define where a message is allowed to appear.
How Smart Content ensures messages feel natural
Smart Content is designed to blend into the shopper experience. It avoids appearing too often, appearing too early or appearing in places where it feels out of context. By combining page type, placement, behaviour and display rules, it ensures that messages feel helpful rather than disruptive.
This creates a messaging layer that feels intuitive and trustworthy.
