How to edit and manage Smart Content
How to update, organise, activate, deactivate, and delete Smart Content using the Smart Content menu.
Overview
Smart Content adapts to visitor behaviour, so keeping it updated ensures that the right message appears at the right moment.
Managing Smart Content includes:
- Editing content
- Updating segments, rules, triggers, and frequency
- Changing priority
- Activating or deactivating items
- Deleting items you no longer need
Your Smart Content list shows all items in one place, making it easy to maintain seasonal campaigns, offers, and targeted messages.
Smart Content does not update automatically. You must edit it manually when your promotions or targeting change.
Open the Smart Content menu
All management actions happen inside the Smart Content menu.
To access it:
- Go to the left navigation
- Click 'Smart Content'
- View the table of all Smart Content items
The table shows:
- Name
- Content type
- Segment
- Status
- Priority
- Last updated
The Smart Content table is the control centre for all your banners, offers, and messages.
Edit an existing Smart Content item
To edit any Smart Content item:
- Open the Smart Content menu
- Find the item you want to update
- Click on it to open the editor
You will return to the full Smart Content flow, including:
- Segment
- Content type
- Display rules
- Trigger
- Frequency
- Preview
- Content editor
You can update any part of the configuration.
Example:
Change a seasonal banner into a new promotion without creating a new item.
Editing a Smart Content item updates it instantly for all visitors who qualify.
Update the Segment
You can change who sees the content by selecting a different segment.
Common updates include:
- Changing from new visitors to returning visitors
- Targeting high intent visitors instead of all visitors
- Switching to a location based segment for regional promotions
Example:
Update a welcome message to target returning visitors with a loyalty offer.
Changing the segment can significantly increase or decrease how often the content appears.
Update Display Rules
Display rules control where the content appears.
You can update rules such as:
- Page type
- Specific products or collections
- Cart value
- Time on site
- Device type
Example:
Change a banner from showing on all product pages to showing only on a specific collection.
If your content stops appearing after editing rules, the new rules may be too narrow.
Update Trigger and Frequency
Triggers and frequency control when and how often the content appears.
You can update:
- Trigger timing
- Scroll depth
- Time on page
- Add to cart triggers
- Frequency limits
Example:
Change an offer from showing on page load to showing after 10 seconds to increase engagement.
If frequency is set too low, returning visitors may not see the content again for days.
Edit the Content (Banner, Offer, or Message)
You can update the content itself without changing the targeting.
Banner updates
- Replace the image
- Update the headline
- Change the button link
- Refresh seasonal messaging
Offer updates
- Change the discount code
- Update the headline or CTA
- Adjust the offer text
Message updates
- Rewrite the message
- Add urgency or reassurance
- Update supporting text
Example:
Replace a winter sale banner with a spring promotion while keeping the same targeting.
Updating content does not affect your targeting unless you change the rules.
Change Priority
Priority decides which Smart Content appears when multiple items match the same visitor.
To update priority:
- Open the Smart Content menu
- Locate the priority column
- Adjust the order so the most important content is highest
Higher priority items override lower priority ones.
Example:
Move a limited time offer above a general welcome message.
If your content is active but not showing, another item with higher priority may be selected instead.
Activate or deactivate Smart Content
You can turn Smart Content on or off without deleting it.
To deactivate:
- Open the Smart Content menu
- Toggle the item to 'Inactive'
To reactivate:
- Toggle it back to 'Active'
Deactivation is useful for:
- Seasonal campaigns
- Limited time offers
- Testing new content
- Pausing content without deleting it
Inactive Smart Content never appears, even if all rules match.
Delete Smart Content
If you no longer need an item:
- Open the Smart Content menu
- Click the item
- Select 'Delete'
- Confirm the deletion
Deleting removes the item permanently.
Example:
Delete an expired holiday offer after the season ends.
Deleted Smart Content cannot be recovered. Deactivate it instead if you may reuse it later.
