How to edit and delete Personalisation widgets
How to update, adjust, and safely remove Personalisation Widgets in the Liva 7 Personalisation Engine.
Overview
Editing a Personalisation Widget allows you to adjust its strategy, layout, or page assignment without creating a new widget. Deleting a widget removes it entirely so Liva 7 can fall back to page strategies or other widgets.
These actions help you refine your recommendations, fix misconfigurations, and keep your setup clean and predictable.
Editing a widget updates it instantly on your storefront as long as the correct theme block is placed.
Where to manage your widgets
All widget management happens in:
Personalisation Engine → Manage Widgets
This table shows:
- Widget name
- Page type
- Display type
- Strategy
- Status
- Actions (view, edit, delete)
This is the central place for updating or removing widgets.
If your widget does not appear in this table, it has not been created or was deleted.
How to open a widget for editing
To edit an existing widget:
- Go to Personalisation Engine
- Click 'Manage Widgets'
- Find the widget you want to update
- Click 'Edit'
This opens the widget configuration screen where you can change strategy, display type, page type, or name.
You do not need to re-add the theme block after editing. The block stays connected.
How to rename a widget for better organisation
Clear naming helps you identify which widget is powering your storefront.
To rename a widget:
- Open the widget in the edit screen
- Update the widget name field
- Click 'Save'
Use names like:
- 'Homepage - Trending'
- 'Product Page - Recently Viewed'
- 'Collection Page - Personalised Picks'
Renaming a widget does not affect its behaviour or placement.
How to change the widget strategy
To update what the widget shows:
- Open the widget
- Find the 'Recommended Strategy' dropdown
- Select a new strategy
- Click 'Save'
Your storefront will now use the updated strategy.
If the new strategy cannot return enough products, Liva 7 may fall back to page strategy or fallback behaviour.
How to change display type and page type
To change how the widget looks:
- Open the widget
- Find the 'Display Type' dropdown
- Choose 'Carousel', 'Grid', or 'Single item'
- Click 'Save'
To change where the widget applies:
- Find the 'Page Type' dropdown
- Select home, product, collection, or cart
- Click 'Save'
A widget assigned to the wrong page type will never appear.
How to safely edit a live widget
Editing a widget updates it instantly on your storefront. You do not need to remove or re-add the theme block.
To test changes safely:
- Use an unpublished theme
- Use preview mode
- Use an incognito window
- Temporarily switch display type to identify the widget
- Temporarily choose a broad strategy like 'Trending'
Staff accounts may not see the same recommendations as new visitors.
How to delete a widget
To remove a widget completely:
- Go to Personalisation Engine
- Click 'Manage Widgets'
- Find the widget
- Click the 'Delete' icon
- Confirm deletion
After deletion:
- The widget is removed from the table
- Liva 7 will no longer consider it
- Another widget or the page strategy will take over
- The theme block remains active and will not break
What happens if you delete the only widget for a page
If no Personalisation Widget exists for the page type, the Widget block in your theme will not display anything.
This is expected behaviour.
The Widget block can only render widgets that you have created in the app, so you must create a widget for that specific page type before anything will appear in the Theme Editor or on your storefront.
The homepage will always show recommendations if the block is added, even with zero widgets created.
Best practices for managing widgets
To keep your setup clean and predictable:
- Keep only one or two widgets per page type
- Avoid overlapping widgets with identical strategies
- Delete widgets you no longer use
- Rename widgets clearly
- Test changes in an incognito window
- Ensure strategies have enough product availability
- Confirm the theme block is placed on the correct template
Most widget issues come from the block being added to the wrong template or the strategy returning too few products.
