How to analyse Widget Performance

How to understand impressions, clicks, conversions, revenue, and detailed insights for Personalisation Widgets and Smart Content Widgets.

Overview

Personalisation Widgets and Smart Content Widgets are two of the most important tools for influencing shopper behaviour. The Widget Performance dashboard shows how these widgets contribute to engagement, conversions, and revenue across your store.

Analysing widget performance helps you:

  • Understand how shoppers interact with your widgets
  • Identify which widgets drive the most value
  • Compare Personalisation Widgets and Smart Content Widgets
  • Optimise placement, targeting, and content
  • Improve product relevance and messaging
  • Make data driven decisions about your personalisation strategy

Widget performance is one of the clearest indicators of how effectively your store is using AI to influence shopper behaviour.

How Personalisation Widgets and Smart Content Widgets work

Understanding how each widget type behaves helps you interpret the analytics correctly.

Personalisation Widgets

These are product recommendation widgets that show shoppers items they are likely to buy.

They influence:

  • Product discovery
  • Add to cart behaviour
  • Revenue and AOV lift

Smart Content Widgets

These are personalised messaging widgets that show targeted content based on shopper behaviour or segments.

They influence:

  • Engagement
  • Click behaviour
  • Segment activation

Example:
A Smart Content Widget may show a personalised message to returning visitors, while a Personalisation Widget recommends products on the same page.

Personalisation Widgets drive revenue. Smart Content Widgets drive engagement.

Opening the Widget Performance tab

To access widget analytics:

  1. Open the left navigation
  2. Click 'Performance'
  3. Select 'Widget Performance'

You will see a list of all Personalisation Widgets and Smart Content Widgets, each with its own metrics.

The Widget Performance tab shows analytics for every widget you have created.

How Widget metrics are calculated

Each metric tells you something different about shopper behaviour.

Impressions

Counted when the widget is displayed on a page.

Clicks

Counted when a shopper interacts with the widget.

CTR

Clicks divided by impressions.

Conversions

Counted when a shopper who interacted with the widget completes a purchase.

Revenue

Revenue from orders influenced by widget interactions.

AOV lift

How much higher the average order value is when the widget is involved.

Example:
If a shopper clicks a Personalisation Widget and later buys one of the recommended products, the revenue is attributed to that widget.

AOV lift is one of the strongest indicators of widget effectiveness.

Understanding good vs poor performance

Interpreting the metrics helps you understand what is working and what needs improvement.

Strong performance

  • High impressions and high clicks
  • High CTR
  • Strong conversion influence
  • Positive AOV lift
  • Consistent performance across devices

Weak performance

  • High impressions but low clicks
  • High clicks but low conversions
  • Low impressions due to poor placement
  • Low revenue influence
  • Poor mobile performance

Example:
A widget with high CTR but low conversions may be recommending products that shoppers click but do not buy.

CTR shows engagement. Conversions show commercial impact.

Placement Strategy for better performance

Placement is one of the biggest drivers of widget performance.

Best placements for Personalisation Widgets

  • High on product pages
  • Below the main product information
  • On the cart page
  • On collection pages with high intent

Best placements for Smart Content Widgets

  • At the top of the page
  • Between sections to break up content
  • On landing pages
  • On the homepage for broad messaging

Placement issues to avoid

  • Placing widgets too low on the page
  • Stacking too many widgets together
  • Using the same widget on every page

Small placement changes often produce large improvements in CTR and conversions.

Device and Segment behaviour

Widgets often perform differently across devices and segments.

Device behaviour

  • Mobile impressions may be higher
  • Mobile CTR is often lower due to smaller screens
  • Desktop widgets may drive higher AOV

Segment behaviour

  • Smart Content Widgets rely heavily on segments
  • Some segments may have low traffic
  • Segment performance helps you refine targeting

Example:
If a widget performs well on desktop but poorly on mobile, you may need to adjust spacing or layout.

Use device and segment insights to refine your personalisation strategy.

Using the 'View' button for detailed insights

Each widget includes a 'View' button that opens a detailed analytics panel.

Inside the detailed view, you can see:

  • Daily impressions and clicks
  • Conversion paths
  • Revenue breakdown
  • Product level performance
  • Segment level engagement
  • Device level performance

This helps you diagnose issues and identify opportunities.

Example:
If a widget shows strong engagement but low revenue, the product level view may reveal that certain items are underperforming.

The detailed view provides the most complete picture of widget behaviour.

Exporting Widget Performance data

You can export widget performance data as a CSV file.

To export:

  1. Click 'Export CSV'
  2. Choose your date range
  3. Download the file

Exporting allows you to:

  • Analyse data in spreadsheets
  • Share results with your team
  • Combine widget data with Shopify analytics
  • Build custom reports

Exporting data is ideal for deeper analysis or team reporting.
