How to fix Smart Content that is not appearing
How to troubleshoot Smart Content when banners, offers, or messages are not showing on your storefront.
Overview
Smart Content only appears when all conditions are met. If even one part of the setup is incorrect, the banner, offer, or message will not show.
Common causes include:
- The Smart Content block is missing
- The Smart Content item is inactive
- The wrong page template is being edited
- The segment does not match the visitor
- Display rules are too narrow
- Trigger or frequency settings prevent it from showing
- Another Smart Content item has higher priority
This guide helps you identify and fix each issue.
Smart Content will never appear unless the Smart Content block is added to the page.
Check that the Smart Content Block Is added
Smart Content cannot appear without the correct theme block.
To confirm:
- Open Shopify admin
- Go to Online Store → Themes
- Click 'Edit theme'
- Select the correct page template
- Look for the 'Smart Content' block in the layout
If the block is missing, add it from the 'Apps' tab.
Example:
If you created Smart Content for the product page, but the block is only added to the homepage, nothing will appear.
This is the number one reason Smart Content does not show.
Make sure you are editing the correct template
Smart Content appears only on the template where the block is placed.
To check:
- In the theme editor, open the template selector
- Confirm you are editing the same template where the block was added
- Switch templates if needed
Example:
If the block is added to 'product.json' but you are previewing a custom product template, the content will not appear.
Shopify themes often have multiple versions of product and collection templates.
Confirm the Smart Content item is active
Inactive Smart Content never appears.
To check:
- Open the Smart Content menu
- Look at the status column
- Make sure the item is toggled to 'Active'
If it is inactive, activate it.
Example:
A seasonal offer may have been deactivated after a campaign ended.
When saving Smart Content, make sure the 'content is active' toggle is on.
Check the Segment
If the visitor does not match the selected segment, the content will not appear.
To test:
- Review the segment selected in the Smart Content item
- Open an incognito window
- Visit the site as a new visitor
- Check whether the content appears
Example:
If the segment is 'Returning visitors', a new visitor will never see it.
Segment mismatch is one of the most common causes of Smart Content not appearing.
Review Display rules
Display rules decide where the content appears. If the rules are too narrow, the content may never match.
To check:
- Open the Smart Content item
- Review the display rules
- Confirm the page you are testing matches the rules
Example:
If the rule is 'Show on cart page', the content will not appear on product pages.
Start with broad rules, then refine once you confirm the content appears.
Check Trigger and Frequency settings
Triggers and frequency can prevent Smart Content from appearing even when everything else is correct.
Trigger issues
- Trigger set to 'After scroll' will not show until the visitor scrolls
- Trigger set to 'After time on page' will not show immediately
- Trigger set to 'After add to cart' will not show until an item is added
Frequency issues
- 'Once per session' means you may not see it again until you open an incognito window
- 'Once per day' means returning visitors may not see it again for 24 hours
Example:
If the trigger is 'After 10 seconds', the content will not appear until the timer completes.
Frequency is often the hidden reason Smart Content does not appear during testing.
Check Smart Content Priority
If multiple Smart Content items match the same visitor, only the highest priority item will appear.
To check:
- Open the Smart Content menu
- Look at the priority column
- Confirm your item is above others that target the same visitor
Example:
A high priority welcome banner may override a lower priority offer.
Priority decides which Smart Content wins when multiple items match.
Use Preview AI Targeting to confirm eligibility
The preview screen shows whether your Smart Content is eligible to appear.
To check:
- Open the Smart Content item
- Go to the preview step
- Review which visitors qualify
- Look for warnings such as 'No eligible visitors'
If the preview shows no matches, adjust your segment, rules, or triggers.
Example:
If the preview shows zero eligible visitors, your rules may be too restrictive.
The preview is the fastest way to diagnose targeting issues.
Test in an Incognito Window
Your browser history, cookies, or previous interactions may affect what you see.
To test cleanly:
- Open an incognito or private window
- Visit the page where the block is placed
- Perform any required actions (scroll, wait, add to cart)
- Check whether the Smart Content appears
Example:
If frequency is set to once per session, incognito mode resets the session so you can see the content again.
Always test Smart Content in a clean session to avoid false negatives.
