How to manage Data Privacy settings

How to control customer tracking, data retention, and privacy behaviour for your personalisation platform.

Overview

The Data Privacy Settings screen allows you to control how customer data is collected, stored, and anonymised. These settings help you stay compliant with privacy requirements while maintaining the level of personalisation your store needs.

You can use this screen to:

  • Require customer consent before tracking
  • Enable Privacy Mode to limit behavioural tracking
  • Set how long customer data is retained
  • Choose when personally identifiable information (PII) is anonymised
  • Save and apply privacy rules across your store

These settings directly influence how personalisation works and how customer data is protected.

These settings control how customer data is collected and stored by your personalisation platform.

Opening the Data Privacy settings screen

To manage your privacy settings:

  1. Open the left navigation
  2. Click Settings
  3. Select Data Privacy

You will see all available privacy controls along with tooltips that explain each option.

The Data Privacy screen shows your tracking, retention, and anonymisation controls.

Require consent before tracking

This toggle determines whether tracking begins immediately or only after the customer gives explicit consent.

What it does

When enabled, your platform waits for the customer to accept your consent banner before collecting any behavioural data.

When to enable

  • You operate in GDPR‑regulated regions
  • You want to ensure explicit consent before tracking
  • You use a cookie banner that requires opt‑in

When to disable

  • You operate in regions without strict consent laws
  • You want maximum personalisation accuracy
  • You want tracking to begin automatically

When enabled, tracking begins only after the customer gives consent.

Privacy Mode

Privacy Mode limits the amount of behavioural data collected while still allowing essential events to be tracked.

What it does

When enabled, your platform collects only essential events such as purchases. Browsing behaviour is not tracked.

When to enable

  • You want to reduce data collection
  • You want to offer a more privacy‑focused experience
  • You need to comply with stricter privacy expectations

When to disable

  • You want full personalisation accuracy
  • You rely on browsing behaviour for segments and recommendations

When enabled, only essential events are tracked. Browsing behaviour is not collected.

Data retention

This dropdown controls how long customer behaviour data is stored before being automatically removed.

What it does

You can choose a retention period such as 30, 60, 90, 180, or 365 days.

Shorter retention

  • Increases privacy
  • Reduces stored data
  • Limits long‑term personalisation

Longer retention

  • Improves personalisation accuracy
  • Enhances segmentation
  • Provides richer performance insights

Determines how long customer behaviour data is stored before being deleted.

Anonymise PII after

This dropdown controls when personally identifiable information (PII) is removed from customer profiles.

What it does

After the selected period, customer identity (such as name or email) is removed, but behavioural data remains for analytics.

Why this matters

  • Reduces long‑term storage of personal data
  • Helps comply with data minimisation laws
  • Keeps historical behaviour for reporting without storing identity

Removes customer identity after the selected period while keeping anonymous behaviour data.

Saving your Privacy settings

After adjusting your settings:

  1. Review each toggle and dropdown
  2. Click Save
  3. Wait for the confirmation message
  4. Refresh your storefront if needed

Changes apply immediately and affect all future tracking and data handling.

Click Save to apply your privacy settings.

Troubleshooting Privacy issues

Personalisation is not appearing

  • Consent may be required but not given
  • Privacy Mode may be enabled
  • Retention may be too short
  • Tracking may be blocked by browser settings

Customer behaviour is missing

  • Data may have expired due to retention settings
  • PII may have been anonymised
  • Tracking may be disabled

Segments are not updating

  • Privacy Mode may be limiting behaviour tracking
  • Consent may not have been granted

Adjust your settings and click Save to resolve these issues.

Best practices

  • Enable consent if you operate in regulated regions
  • Use Privacy Mode only when necessary
  • Choose a retention period that balances privacy and personalisation
  • Anonymise PII regularly to reduce risk
  • Update your privacy policy to reflect these settings
  • Review your configuration quarterly

Final checklist

Before leaving the Data Privacy screen, confirm:

  • Consent requirements match your region
  • Privacy Mode is set appropriately
  • Data retention period is correct
  • PII anonymisation timing is correct
  • All changes were saved successfully
  • Your privacy policy reflects your settings

A well‑configured privacy setup keeps your store compliant while maintaining effective personalisation.
