AI search vs keyword search: what Shopify teams should check

Understand keyword, semantic and hybrid search, then separate search evaluation from approved product recommendations. No blanket claim that AI search is better.

Keyword search and semantic search solve different retrieval problems. Neither is automatically better for every query. For your Shopify store, the useful question is whether customers can find the right products, with accurate details and the controls your team needs.

This guide explains the distinction. Liva 7 supports approved product recommendations, bundles and content on supported placements. It is not a replacement for your Shopify search engine or checkout.

What keyword, semantic and hybrid search mean

Keyword retrieval matches terms in a query with indexed content. Semantic retrieval compares representations of meaning and can find related wording. Hybrid search combines keyword and semantic retrieval into one ranked result list. These are retrieval methods, not promises of better commercial results. See Elastic's technical explanations of semantic search and hybrid search.

In product discovery, an exact product code and a broad description are different tasks. Your evaluation should include both. Do not assume a search system will understand a specialist term, recognise compatibility or apply a stock constraint until you have checked it against your catalogue.

Start with queries from your own catalogue

Build a small evaluation set before choosing a search approach. Record the query, acceptable results and any result that would be misleading. Use real product facts and avoid assuming that a plausible-sounding match is suitable.

  • Exact requests: product names, model numbers and known identifiers.
  • Broad needs: descriptions of a task, use or desired property.
  • Ambiguous requests: words that could refer to more than one product type.
  • Boundary cases: unavailable products, incompatible accessories and missing product details.

Keep the same queries and catalogue snapshot when comparing results. Review useful matches, misleading matches, empty results and response time. Treat this as a product evaluation, not proof that one technology always wins.

Search and recommendations are different surfaces

Search responds to a customer's query. A recommendation placement presents an eligible product experience in a supported position. Recommendations can complement a discovery journey, but that does not mean they replace query handling, filters or search-result ranking.

In Liva 7, you choose the recommendation purpose and product boundaries, approve an experience and control its placement. Selection depends on eligible products, available context and applicable privacy settings. Read how Liva 7 product recommendations work and how to plan recommendations without crowding your store.

Keep relevance and commercial evidence separate

A relevant-looking result is not evidence of an incremental sale. An order recorded after an interaction can be associated with that interaction without being caused by it. Read influenced revenue versus incremental impact before deciding what to claim.

Liva 7's supported tests compare recommendation strategies, Smart content or bundle displays. They do not establish arbitrary search-engine, checkout or whole-website testing. A test may remain inconclusive.

If you meant AI document search

Finding a passage inside a document collection is a different use case from finding a product on Shopify. The retrieval terms may overlap, but the content, permissions and evaluation questions differ. This article does not describe an enterprise document-search product or claim that Liva 7 provides one.

Choose the next step that fits your problem

If customers struggle with queries or filters, assess your search setup against a representative query set. If the need is to present a relevant approved product experience, explore Shopify personalisation with Liva 7. For implementation, use the recommendation setup guide.
