Plan product recommendations without crowding your store
A recommendation earns space by helping a shopper make progress. More blocks do not automatically create more relevance.

Recommendation blocks are easy to add and difficult to govern. A product page can quickly collect related items, recently viewed products, best sellers, bundles and cross-sells, each competing with product imagery and the purchase decision.
Begin with the shopper job and the page role. Then decide whether a recommendation is the best way to help.
One placement, one useful purpose
A Product-page recommendation might help comparison or add a compatible item. A Collection placement might help discovery. A Cart placement should respect what is already in the basket and avoid delaying checkout.
Define the eligible audience, products, market and journey context. Exclude unavailable items, the current product and anything already in the basket where repetition would be unhelpful.
Treat no output as a designed state
When no approved recommendation is eligible, a block should usually disappear cleanly. Generic products displayed merely to occupy the frame can weaken relevance and trust.
If a fallback is genuinely useful, approve it explicitly and apply the same stock, exclusion and presentation checks. Preview how the whole page feels at mobile and desktop widths.
A practical route
- Name the journey job. Discovery, comparison, completion or basket relevance.
- Choose one page role. Place the experience where it supports the primary task.
- Set eligibility. Define products, audience, exclusions, frequency and conflicts.
- Verify delivery. Separate Theme Editor placement from real shopper display.
Keep these checks visible
- Review the full page, not only the block
- Limit competing experiences
- Measure delivery before interpreting performance
The premium storefront often shows less. A recommendation should feel like a useful part of your store, not an advertisement for its software.
