What should Shopify AI be allowed to do?

The useful question is not whether AI can perform an action. It is whether that action should happen under current evidence and authority.

AI can summarise behaviour, compare options, prepare content and call software capable of changing commerce objects. Technical possibility is not an operating policy. Your team still needs to decide which actions deserve observation, recommendation, approval or bounded execution.

Authority should be granted by area and consequence, with no path for a model to approve its own work.

Match authority to commercial risk

Low-risk, reversible work with strong information may suit bounded execution. A recommendation strategy can be adjusted inside approved limits, or an unsafe placement can be paused after a verified health condition.

Price changes, open-ended discounts, customer communication, destructive catalogue work and theme publication carry different consequences. They should not become autonomous because an integration makes them possible.

Make the boundary executable

A real policy specifies domain, scope, information floor, action rate, cooldown, commercial guardrails, reversibility, owner and active version. Check it when work is proposed and again immediately before execution.

Provide observation mode, expiry for temporary authority, conflict locks, an emergency stop and a permanent receipt. These are product controls, not promises in a policy page.

A practical route

  1. Classify the action. Identify reach, customer consequence, value at risk and reversibility.
  2. Set the evidence floor. Name the source, freshness and confidence required.
  3. Choose the mode. Observe, Recommend, Ask first or Act within limits.
  4. Verify and review. Record execution, delivery, outcome and any restoration.

Keep these checks visible

  • Keep authority separate by area
  • Never infer permission from conversation
  • Count restraint and prevented risk as value

Responsible automation is specific. Everyone should be able to see what may happen, under which limits and how to stop or restore it.
