Design approval rules for commerce automation
Approval is meaningful only when the person sees the exact change, its consequence and the evidence that supports it.

A generic ‘Allow’ button is not a control system. If the underlying proposal can change after approval, if scope is unclear or if a person cannot see the previous state, the decision is not accountable.
Strong approval design binds one person and one decision to one immutable requested change.
Show the decision before the button
Present current and proposed state, affected products or pages, audience, market, commercial limits, information snapshot, expected measurement and restoration availability. Explain what Liva 7 will not change.
If products, content, scope or assumptions change materially, expire the approval. Ask again with a new version rather than stretching earlier consent.
Control execution after approval
Approval should move through explicit states such as Awaiting approval, Approved, Running, Succeeded, Failed, Cancelled, Skipped and Restored. Reject invalid transitions and use an idempotency key so retries do not duplicate commerce objects.
Capture provider confirmation and resulting state. Group follow-on events into one story so your team can inspect failure, recovery and outcome without reconstructing scattered notifications.
A practical route
- Freeze the request. Bind scope, evidence and proposed state to one version.
- Check the approver. Validate role, store scope and policy at decision time.
- Recheck guardrails. Validate current stock, limits and conflicts before execution.
- Issue the receipt. Record previous state, result, actor, time and restoration route.
Keep these checks visible
- Set an expiry
- Require a reason for rejection where it improves learning
- Separate preparation from approval for high-risk work
The quality of an approval is measured by whether another responsible person can understand exactly what was decided and what happened next.
